The University of Utah is proud to be a commuter-friendly campus. We encourage the use of non-motorized forms of transportation by members of the community. The goal of the S.A.F.E. campaign is to ensure a safe environment for pedestrians, riders, and drivers while helping avoid damage to University property and facilities by inappropriate use of wheeled devices.

With more and more bikes at the University of Utah, it's important to understand some basic safety rules. Always maintain a safe speed, especially when in an intersection or heavily traveled part of campus. Please allow at least three feet between a bike and a pedestrian when passing. Give a verbal cue or ring a bike bell to let pedestrians know when you are approaching or passing.

Although pedestrians have the right of way, we encourage you to use sidewalk etiquette. Pedestrians should make room for wheeled devices to pass. Remove headphones, use appropriate walking paths, and be aware of our surroundings.

Skateboards, Long-boards, and Scooters

Skateboarders and other vehicles without brakes are allowed on campus sidewalks but are prohibited from parking lots and roadways. Always remain in control and yield to other sidewalk users.

Golf Carts, Construction Vehicles, and Maintenance Vehicles

Motorized vehicles often will share the sidewalks with pedestrians, bikes, skateboards, and scooters. Please use caution when approaching golf carts, maintenance vehicles, and construction machinery.

For emergencies or to report violations of the University's sidewalk policy, call 801-585-COPS (2677)
